Click HERE and sign in to take a FREE e-COURSE provided by the American Sailing Association (ASA). Once you've completed this e-COURSE, you can then determine if you want to take our Basic Introduction to Sailing Class and/or our ASA 101 Basic Keelboat and ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising classes.
BASIC INTRODUCTION TO SAILING CLASS:
A 2.5 hour (semi-private) lesson where each student will get a "feel" for sailing. Literally! Each student will have " wheel time" steering the boat. Our experienced (45 years) United States Coast Guard licensed Captain will guide you through the class.
A unique "hands-on" experience your first time on the water. All classes are subject to availability.
ASA 101 BASIC KEELBOAT:
Perfect introductory course to help you learn about sailing.
Format: Taught in 4 three hour classes (12 hours total).
Cost: $445 includes books and course maerials and 1 year ASA membership
Receive a $25 discount when two people book as a couple or when two friends take the class together.
One-on-one Instruction, $100 additional.

ASA 103 BASIC COASTAL CRUISING:
Prerequisites: ASA 101 Basic Keel-boat Sailing Certificate.
Provides necessary knowledge to safely cruise in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew in moderate winds and sea conditions.
Format: Taught in 3 three hour classes and two 3.5 hour classes (16 hours total).
Cost: $555 includes books, course materials, ASA 101 and ASA 103 certifications.

ASA 104 BARE-BOAT CHARTERING:
Prerequisites: ASA 101 Basic Keel-boat Sailing Certificate and ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising Certificate
This is an advanced cruising standard for sailors with cruising experience. Certified students act as skipper or crew of a 30-50 foot boat sailing by day in coastal waters. The course includes basic navigation, cruise planning, advanced anchoring techniques, boat systems and maintenance procedures. Most charter companies require a sailing resume from the Skipper chartering the boat, and look for this certification.
Format: taught on Lake Michigan over three full days and two nights. We set sail for a foreign port on day one, stay on-board overnight, sail to another port on day two, stay on-board overnight, and then sail back to the home port the following day.
Three Class Options: Sept 19-21, Sept 23-25, or Sept 26-28
Day One: All classes begin at 10am, we'll depart from Belmont Harbor and sail to a foreign port.
(Example: Michigan City)
Day Two: We'll set sail for a different foreign port. (Example: New Buffalo or St. Joe)
Day Three: We'll set sail for Chicago to arrive back at Belmont Harbor by 6pm.
Cost: $795 for the three day, two night course includes books, course materials, all docking fees and two nights on-board the boat. Prerequisite; ASA 101 and 103 certifications. Receive a $50 returning student discount if you've had classes with us in the past.
One-on-one Instruction $125 additional.
SAILING REFRESHER (SEMI-PRIVATE):
Available for novice or seasoned sailors looking for a "refresher" course. Format: Course is divided into four, semi-private, 2 hour sessions:
(1) orientation sail - includes all pre and post sail preparation procedures
(1) crew clinic - we train your crew so they know what's expected of them when under sail & docking
(1) docking clinic - includes starboard side throttle and port side tie-up practice
(1) check out sail - you skipper the boat and perform all procedures while directing your crew
Cost: $800 (One-on-one Refresher - $125 additional)
CHICAGO YACHT SHARE BARE-BOAT CHARTERER REQUIREMENTS:
In order to skipper our yacht(s), for your safety, and the safety of your guests:
NOVICE SAILORS: Must have ASA 101 and ASA 103 or US Sailing (equivalent) credentials
EXPERIENCED SAILORS: Must be a USCG Licensed Captain with sailing endorsement, and/or documented sea time on a similar size vessel.
Sea Safaris ASA classes can be taken at Belmont Harbor in Chicago, as well as in Waukegan, and Milwaukee.ALL SAILORS, BOTH NOVICE AND EXPERIENCED, MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE
AND PASS OUR SEMI-PRIVATE:
- 2 hour orientation sail
- 2 hour docking clinic
- 2 hour crew clinic, and
- 2 hour check out sail
